book of hours for the use of Chartres (Hours of the Virgin) and Tours (Office of the Dead); calendar in French; written and illuminated in Tours, France, ca. 1495.
Decoration: 12 full-page miniatures, 21 small miniatures.
Artist: a follower of Jean Poyer (formerly Poyet).


Half-figure of Evangelist John, nimbed, writing with right hand in book held with left hand. Evangelist symbol (eagle) at right.
Margins decorated with border of floreate ornament, including viola, strawberry, daisy, thistle and rose, and inhabited by birds and fantastic animal.

Decoration: 8 full-page and 9 small miniatures; 22 calendar vignettes; inhabited borders.

Decoration: 12 large and 6 small miniatures.
Artist: a follower of Jean Bourdichon.


Virgin Mary: Annunciation -- Archangel Gabriel, nimbed, indicating upward with right hand, holding scepter with left hand, kneels before, and looks toward, Virgin Mary, nimbed, with joined hands, seated on throne, with open book on her lap. Dove of Holy Ghost, nimbed, flies amid rays extending to Mary.
Margins decorated with border of floreate ornament including strawberry and thistle, and inhabited by birds, fly, and two monkeys one, winged ?, astride fantastic animal, the other astride fantastic bird (Scene, Burlesque: Riding).

Decoration: 8 full-page miniatures.
Two leaves from this manuscript (the calendar miniatures for November and December) are located in the Musée Marmottan, Paris (the Wildenstein Collection, no. 162 and 164); one leaf (the calendar miniature for May) is located in the Wallace Collection, London, M 323; one leaf (the calendar miniature for August) is located in the Musée national de la Renaissance, Ecouen (ECL 8632); one leaf (the miniature of the Annunciation to the Shepherds, formerly in the collection of Jean Masson, Amiens) is in the Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, Paris (Masson MS 165).
Artist: Baptiste Pellerin (formerly the Master of the Hours of Claude Gouffier)


Escutcheon decorated with Gouffier heraldry (or, three bars gemels sable), surrounded by collar of the Order of Archangel Michael, decorated with scallop shells and pendant of Michael transfixing dragon on which he stands. (Angel, Archangel Michael: transfixing Dragon) All is flanked and held by two griffins. Escutcheon is surmounted by crown decorated with gems and pearls (?), in turn surmounted by helmet crowned by wreath (gules, argent and sable) with a plume of ostrich feathers of the same, crested by head of griffin.
Below, framed tablet flanked by two half-figures of armless winged female figures, either with horns, or wearing crowns decorated with horns, winged head at bottom. Tablet inscribed MESSIRE CLAVDE GOVFFIER CH(EVA)L(IE)R DE LORDRE CONTE DE CARVARTZ ET DE MAVLEVRIER SEIGNEVR DE BOYSI ET GRAND ESCVYER DE FRANCE.
All within camaïeu frame decorated with gorgon head (Pagan Type: Medusa), garlands, lion heads or masks, two half-figures of caryatids atop base decorated with heads or masks with support decorated with foliate ornament and entwined with scroll inscribed HAERET TERMINVS HIC at left and HIC TERMINVS HAERET at right. At bottom is medallion enclosing monogram (overlaid Phi and Chi) behind which are two crossed halberds, emblem of Gouffier. All flanked by two bunches of vegetables and fruit, including varieties of squash and grapes.

Decoration: 13 large miniatures, full illuminated borders on miniature pages, partial illuminated borders on text pages, numerous illuminated initials and line fillers; French Gothic style.
Artist: a follower of the Coëtivy Master.


Evangelists, all nimbed, each in separate compartment:
1) Matthew is seated on bench at desk, right hand resting on book; Evangelist symbol, angel, is on opposite side of the desk;
2) Mark, wearing hat, is seated on bench at desk, resting left hand on open book, raising pen (?) with right hand; Evangelist symbol, lion, sits behind the bench;
3) Luke, wearing hat, is seated on bench at desk, resting left hand, and writing with right hand in open book; Evangelist symbol, ox, sits behind him;
4) John is seated on island, writing with right hand on scroll, inscribed S. IOHANNEM, held in his lap by his left hand; Evangelist symbol, eagle, stands next to him; city is in background across water.
Margins decorated with border of floreate ornament including strawberry, and inhabited by fool, tongue emerging from mouth, grasping dragonfly with right hand, and holding pedum under left arm.

book of hours for the use of Le Mans (Hours of the Virgin, Office of the Dead, litany); written and illuminated circa 1430, perhaps in Brittany, France.
Decoration: 16 large miniatures; full borders on miniature pages.


Virgin Mary: Annunciation -- Virgin Mary, nimbed and possibly wearing headgear, raising right hand, grasping cloak with left hand, looks back over her left shoulder toward Archangel Gabriel, nimbed, holding with right hand, scroll inscribed AUE GRACIA PLENA DOMINUS TECUM and raising left hand. Virgin Mary is kneeling on cushion before draped altar or prie-dieu, on which is open book, flanked by side curtains, set within small structure with vaulted ceiling, supported by slender colonnettes between windows. At upper right, half figure of God, crossed nimbus, appears in arc of Heaven amid rays, raising right hand in blessing, and holding tripartite globe with left hand. Rays descend from God to Virgin Mary.
Margins decorated with border of foliate ornament and rinceaux.

Book of hours for the use of Rome (Hours of the Virgin, Office of the Dead); written and illuminated in Paris, France, ca. 1515.
Artist: Follower or workshop of (?) Jean Pichore. Formerly attributed to a follower of the Master of Petrarch's Triumphs.
Decoration: 17 large miniatures, 25 small miniatures.
The calendar is missing. However, two leaves apparently from M. 286 for Dec. and Oct., showing traditional labors and zodiac signs

Decoration: 14 large miniatures.
Artist: various artists, one working in the style of Jean Bourdichon.


Virgin Mary: Annunciation -- Virgin Mary, nimbed, veiled, with hands crossed on her breast, stands or kneels at draped prie-dieu (?), upon which is open book with pseudo-inscription. Before her is archangel Gabriel, nimbed, kneeling on one knee, holding scepter in right hand and with left hand indicating dove of Holy Ghost, with rays as nimbus, descending on rays toward the Virgin. Scene in interior.
Floreate margins inhabited by three fantastic animals, including two playing musical instruments (harp and horn), flanking erased shield (probably Azure fretty or, as on fol. 81r).
